Literature-topic seminars

Individual tuition

NCEA English tuition

Brain-Waves offers individual skills-based tutorials, small-group tutorials, and literature topic seminars from Level One to Level Three.

•  In groups of up to ten students, an exam text is presented in seminar form.

•  These seminars can be tailored to provide students aiming for Merit and Excellence level grades the extra material they need or, alternatively, to help students who are struggling to grasp the material in the classroom.

•  Capable students who have missed out on whole units of work, perhaps due to extended illness or travel, will also find these useful.

• Seminars are two hours in length and cover such things as plot, structure, characters, setting, theme, audience manipulation, and exam essay writing.

• Students leave having participated in discussion, gained a greater understanding of their text, and with a bound booklet of resources they can refer to when studying.

• Each student also receives, included in the cost of the seminar, a review and critique of a literature essay they have written.

• Students benefit from the academic knowledge of a trained teacher as well as the experience of an NCEA marker.

Working alongside the student's own programme in school OR, depending on the situation, in an individually-tailored programme of study, students work at improving the skills they need to master in order to achieve in NCEA. Students are supported and guided to reach their full potential in their Internal Achievement Standards and assisted with the additional content knowledge required to achieve top results in the external Standards.

The following are key skills developed in individual and small-group tutorials:

• Writing skills
